250,000 CFLs for distribution to household residents of Cebu City, Philippines.
Philippine Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes and Jaime Jose Aboitiz, the chief operating officer and senior vice president of the Visayan Electric Company (VECO) ensures its partnership in promoting energy efficiency as the Dept. of Energy (DOE) is set to turn over 250,000 compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) to VECO that highlights the launching of the CFL distribution in Cebu City.
On Thursday, the launching was scheduled at 10:00 a.m. at the VECO Building where a ceremonial signing of the memorandum of agreement (MOA) by both parties inks their agreement.
The DOE is urging power consumers to change their incandescent bulbs (IBs) to CFL as the latter is more energy efficient which means one pays less for monthly electric bills and save more.
IBs generate 80 percent more heat rather than light unlike CFLs which produce more light. The use of IBs means more energy is wasted, according to Philippine Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes.
‘Switch to Efficient Lighting’ through the use of CFLs is the DOEs tagline as they target 13M CFLs to be distributed throughout the country starting this year until the end of next year or early 2011, Allan Bacudo, DOE science research specialist II of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Division said.
Bacudo was one of the speakers during a half-day consultative meeting on Clean Development Mechanism and Climate Change with barangay captains of Cebu City and other stakeholders last month.
The CFL distribution falls under the enhancing energy competence and conservation component of the Philippine Energy Efficiency Program (PEEP) as the energy sectors agenda focuses on attaining a sustainable 60 percent energy self-sufficiency level beyond 2010.
The PEEP has four components where CFL distribution is one while the government took a US $31M loan from the Asian Development Bank apart from its counterpart funding in pursuit of the energy independence agenda.
The other components are: a) increasing the exploration; development and utilization of indigenous energy resources b) intensifying renewable energy resource development and c) increasing the use of alternative fuels while the continuing reforms in the power sector as well as the downstream oil and gas industries will pave the way in realizing a globally competitive Philippine energy sector.
Sec. Reyes will deliver the significance of the CFL Distribution as part of the governments PEEP while a press conference follows right after the signing of the MOA.
Distribution and exchange of CFLs is also another highlight of the launching event.
After the launching, the VECO will make public the distribution centers where household residents can exchange their IBs to CFLs. Household residents can exchange a maximum of six IBs for six CFLs just as long as the IBs surrendered are in good condition. (PIA)
